With a screen that measures 53 inches in diameter, the Sony KP-53V85 rear-projection TV makes sporting events come alive and nature specials seem tantalizingly real. The TV projects from the rear onto a BrightView screen using a trio of high-brightness picture tubes and high-performance hybrid lenses (F1.05), which ensure a crisp, exciting picture. In addition, the TV maintains a wide 120-degree viewing angle so people sitting off to the side can enjoy it as much as those watching from directly in front.

Other features include a Flash Focus system for automatic color convergence (bringing the three color layers into immediate alignment); the Twin View system, which broadcasts two programs simultaneously either side by side or in an inset window; and a comprehensive menu system that's easy to operate and full featured.

The TV also offers several picture modes (vivid, standard, movie, and two custom options), favorite channel preview (the ability to sample up to eight channels without leaving the current station), a sleep timer (with 30-, 60-, and 90-minute settings), jump channel, a freeze option (perfect for capturing addresses or phone numbers), and parental control for users who want to restrict their children's viewing options.

The TV's audio package includes a 40-watt speaker system (20 watts x 2), MTS stereo decoding, a simulated surround mode that creates a surround effect for mono broadcasts, and a TruSurround mode that works similarly for stereo feeds. Users can even use the TV as the center speaker in an otherwise independent surround sound system. Viewers can also adjust the bass, treble, and balance, or enjoy a secondary audio broadcast of the same program when available (typically in another language).

The TV connects to other components through two component video inputs (ideal for DVD players), three S-video inputs (one front and two rear), three composite inputs (one front and two rear), five audio inputs, and audio, TV, and monitor outputs. The front S-video and composite inputs are designed specifically for easy connection to a game console or camcorder. The TV also includes a Control S output and several S-link connections for controlling other Sony devices through the TV's remote sensor.
